Outlook with ActiveSync

IMPORTANT NOTE
If you’re not given the option to add an Exchange account, it could be due to a change that Microsoft made in the 16.0.8431.2079 (and above) release of Outlook in September, 2016. This change introduced Microsoft’s “Simplified Account Creation” process that bypasses the ability to set up non-Microsoft Office365 accounts in Outlook.
For information on the workaround for this, see the article: Enable EAS/Exchange Accounts in Outlook 2016.
Below is the simple way to fix this issue.  Download the Registry Fix ZIP file, extract the file inside and double-click the “DisabledSimplifiedAccountCreation.reg” file.  Close Outlook and Restart it.  You should be back to normal.
Note: Be sure to create a restore point of your registry before running this update.   Here are instructions on how to perform the registry backup.

Other than this issue Microsoft has created, setting up Outlook to connect to a SmarterMail mailbox is very simple. Two things to note, however, before you get started:

  1. Make sure you are connecting an account that has Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync enabled for it. For more information contact WebWize of your account domain admin.
  2. Make sure your mail domain has a valid SSL certificate as Outlook 13 requires a SSL connection when using EAS.

To set up Outlook, do the following:

  1. Open up Outlook and click on the File tab.
  2. Click Add Account.
  3. Click the radio button next to Manual setup or additional server types.
  4. Click Next.
  5. When presented with the Choose Service screen, select Exchange ActiveSync compatible service.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter your user, server (mail.webwizemail.com) and logon informatiom (email address and password). Be sure to use the full email address for the E-mail Address.  If you are unsure of the mail server address, contact your mail administrator or hosting support@webwize.com.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Outlook will automatically test your account settings. When the connection is successful you simply need to close the Test Account Settings pop up and your account is created!
  10. Click Finish to complete the setup of your SmarterMail account in Outlook.

Android Phone using ActiveSync

NOTE: Exchange ActiveSync does not support the corporate calendar or email applications for the Motorola Droid, Droid 2 and Droid X. This is because these phones utilize a special application that does not follow Exchange ActiveSync standards.

Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is available as an optional add-on to SmarterMail. Unlike the other synchronization methods, Exchange ActiveSync uses direct push technology to sync email, calendars, contacts, tasks, notes and folders in real time. Once you have activated the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync add-on and enabled the feature for an email account in SmarterMail, the Android device will need to be configured.

Follow these steps to connect your Android device to SmarterMail via Exchange ActiveSync:

  1. On your Android device, navigate to the settings menu.
  2. Click Accounts & Sync.
  3. Click Add Account.
  4. Click Corporate.
  5. Enter your email address and your password and click Next.
  6. In the Domain\Username field, enter your username and domain using the following format: \example@mydomain.com.
  7. Your password should automatically be entered. If not, enter it now.
  8. In the Server field, enter the URL for the webmail interface: mail.webwizemail.com
  9. Secure Connection (SSL) should be checked.
  10. Click Next and configure your personal preferences for the frequency and amount of data to synchronize.
  11. Click Next again, and configure your name as well as the connection name and click Done.

Your Android powered device is now setup to synchronize data using Exchange ActiveSync
